The story
Small round koláčky belong to a Czech wedding. Couples traditionally send a few with the wedding announcement, about two weeks before the day, serve plates of them at the reception, and pack more into the výslužka, the parcel each guest takes home. Forbes Česko suggests 10 to 15 per announcement and at least 10 per guest at the party. The baking falls to the bride's mother, bridesmaids, grandmothers, aunts and friends, but never to the bride. The Czech tourism board records the old belief that if she bakes or tastes them before the wedding, her marriage will be troubled and her children will cry; Forbes Česko adds that she would bake away her happiness. In some areas the filling carried a wish, Czech Radio reports: farmer's cheese for wellbeing, poppy seed for fertility, strawberries for love. Some places also baked corner koláče, and an unmarried guest who got a corner piece was expected to marry within the year. All of this belongs to weddings, not to February 14. A plate of the three fillings makes an easy dessert for two with coffee, and the rest keep for a couple of days as a gift.
